Via electric bike in areas with good bike lane access, my husband can make his commute to work *faster* than when he’s in his car, because he’s not stuck behind the long line of cars. Bring on more bike lanes!

That was my former commute, as well. (DC).

That twitter conversation was wild and made me wonder if there was no hope. Thank you for taking the time to educate.

I love the old city maps you’ve added to many of your posts. Hard not to have big complicated feelings seeing what we had and tore down. Where do you find them?

Re: posting on X… I was tempted to say something snarky (as I did on your note 😊) but, being serious, I think Twitter is literally designed to make people get made and shout at each other. I’d really recommend quitting “microblogging” platforms altogether, because they’re actively harmful to discourse.

Of course I say this on Substack which I love because it connects long-form writing much like blog-rings and RSS did back in the day… but Substack itself seems to be unable to resist turning itself into a short-form angertainment platform as well, so we’ll see how long this oasis of civility lasts 🤷‍♂️

Yea. In some ways, all social media encourages outrage. I'm trying to quit Twitter, but it's tough!

I don't think it's communist, that's about as silly as calling Lockheed Martin capitalist.

I do, however, not really want or need any of this. I'm never going to use public transport. It's shit. It takes forever. It's actually pretty expensive. If I wanted to see someone huffing paint out of a brown paper bag I'd walk under a bridge (which I do regularly, as an aside).

I took the train the other week just to see what has changed. Other than a multi-billion dollar station expansion it's all the same, all the same problems.

The one use of public transport I could actually support has gone away entirely. They are phasing out cash payments, and the entire network is riddled with CCTV. This is a real shame, because people who have been debanked or are being persecuted by the state could still use public transport otherwise.

As for bikes, I've never had a problem with using mine on the road or bike paths. A road down from my house which was two car lanes one each way has changed to a single both-ways car lane plus a massive bike lane. I've never seen a single cyclist on it, ever. It seems to have been some corrupt council build.

I do think cycling is a very liberating form of transportation, and it addresses some of the concerns I have around state and corporate control of transportation. I just don't see the point in multi-modal transport builds. There are better things to spend limited funds on. Or give me back the portion of my paycheck which is taken each week, that would also suffice.

All of this said, I'm on my way to the most remote place in the country as soon as I can afford the property, so go nuts in the cities I guess.

A driver killed a Ragnar relay runner near me this weekend and I made the mistake of looking at the comments—so much pedestrian blame and “roads are for cars only.” It’s scary and discouraging!

Yea, high rates of driving in the U.S. have created a weird culture.
